I stumbled across the first, a very unusual post-morten photograph of conjoined infants, in an old eBay listing. Couldn't find an unwatermarked version but I thought it was too unusual not to share.
The second is a living little girl with her dead twin sister.

Two sets of twins...Collapse )

Standing Post Mortem

I found these photos in an Etsy shops. They were too expensive for me (as much as i love them) but I still wanted to download and share. Besides, I'm sure the seller won't mind some publicity. ;)

Upon first glance they don't immediately register as post mortem. However, upon close inspection there is really no doubt that the people are dead. Anyway, I'd heard of people taking post mortems by placing the deceased person in a metal stand and taking the photo as if they were alive and standing up, but I've never seen them before.

Dieselpunks Interview - Photographing the afterlife with JR Pepper

Spiritualism and spirit photography by spirit photographer JR Pepper

Dieselpunks Interview - Photographing the afterlife with JR Pepper.

When Spiritualism was all the rage, having a dead relative make an appearance in your portraits could mean big money for a shrewd photographer. By taking a ghostly looking photo ahead of time and then reusing the negative, our dark room magicians could conjure all sorts of hidden shades in their work.

Fast forward 100 years, and you can still find these grifters haunting America's cities, except this time they're capturing spirits for the sake of art. Most notable of the bunch is New York artist JR Pepper. For years now, Pepper has been recreating the photographic techniques of Mumler and Buguet, creating her own contemporary blend of spirit photography.

Take a look under the sheet if you dare.

Ash Wednesday thoughts for Memento Mori

Ash Wednesday is the "Memento Mori" day of the church calendar. When the priest puts ashes on a believer's forehead he says, "Remember that from dust you came and to dust you shall return." Or in other words, "Memento Mori" - Remember your death.

He had 8 children and one step-child with 3 wives. His fourth child with his first wife, a daughter, Alma, was my maternal grandmother. Emil is my great grandfather.

Just some gems I found.

A young boy dying but not yet dead, a woman on a sofa, a stunningly beautiful woman in a coffin outside, and a baby in an interesting and unusual coffin.
